Preventing Windows from Silently Shutting Down Your USB Interface to Save Power

On Windows 2000 and Windows XP,

  1. In the Windows Control Panel, run the System applet

  2. In the System Properties window, click the Device Manager button

  3. In the Device Manager window, expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item by clicking the + symbol to its left

  4. Identify the USB Root Hub to which your USB Interface is attached, and double-click it

  5. In the USB Root Hub Properties window, select the Power Management tab, and

    1. uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power box

    2. click the OK button

If you have more than one USB Root Hub, it may be difficult to determine to which one your USB Interface is attached. In the Device Manager window, selecting the View menu's Devices by connection option and expanding the resulting tree view can be helpful. Alternatively, you can perform step 5 above on all of your PC's USB Root Hubs.
